The Borough of Gosport covers a predominantly urban area of around 11 square miles forming a low-lying peninsula between Portsmouth Harbour to the north and east and the Solent to the south-west.
The Borough is primarily urban in character, but its waterside location is enhanced by tidal inlets and associated open spaces that provide breaks in the built up areas of the town. The other main coastal settlement, Lee-on-the-Solent is separated from the town of Gosport by a narrow area of countryside and woodland.
The total housing stock comprises some 32,269 dwellings. Around 73% of the homes are owner occupied or privately rented, 5% are housing association stock. The Council also has its own housing stock, comprising some 14% of the total number of dwellings in the Borough. The MoD has a major presence in the area, owning the remaining 8% of households and 30% of the Borough's land.
Carbon dioxide emissions from homes account for approximately 25% of all carbon emissions, to help reduce emissions from the domestic sector Gosport Borough Council have set up a pledge scheme to encourage residents to be more energy efficient and a new Council grant scheme. The HEAT Hampshire scheme offers Gosport residents grants to install energy efficiency measures in their homes, to find out more call 0800 093 4050.
