The Isle of Wight occupies a total of 146.8 square miles off the south coast of England. Predominantly rural in character, the main conurbation is Newport, with the other main towns being Ryde, Cowes, Shanklin and Sandown.
The Isle of Wight has 60,000 houses with a population of 130,000. 82% of the homes are owner occupied (well above the national average of 65%). Only 8% are privately rented and 10% are housing association stock. The Council does not own its own housing stock.
