The City of Southampton covers a predominantly urban area of around 50 square kilometres in the very south of Hampshire. It is a heavily urban area with a total population of around 218,000 people living in 86,000 households.

The Council administers around 21.5% of the housing stock. Around 61% of the homes are owner occupied, 13% are privately rented and the remaining 4.5% are housing association stock.
